Penny Recalls Fresh Mettwurst in 13 German States After STEC Detected

Health officials warn the bacteria can trigger severe illness, including hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

Overview

  • The recall covers “Mettwurst frisch nach Art einer schnittfesten Rohwurst,” roughly 100 g in a fresh pack, with best-before dates 02.10.25, 04.10.25, 07.10.25 and 09.10.25.
  • Manufacturer Bedien-Concept GmbH has removed the product from sale at Penny stores and customers can return it for a refund, typically even without a receipt.
  • The affected batches were sold in Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thüringen.
  • Consumers are told not to eat the sausage; those who develop severe or persistent symptoms after consumption should seek medical care and mention possible STEC exposure, while asymptomatic individuals are not advised to see a doctor.
  • STEC was found during controls, with illness often starting in 2 to 10 days (commonly 3 to 4) and symptoms ranging from diarrhea and abdominal pain to bloody stools, fever, vomiting and possible HUS in severe cases.
