Pennsylvania Senate Panel Subpoenas Records on $1 Million Security Upgrades to Shapiro’s Private Home

The GOP-led committee seeks detailed spending and travel documents after months of disputed disclosures.

Overview

  • The Senate Intergovernmental Operations Committee voted 7–4 along party lines to issue three subpoenas on Tuesday, directing requests to the Pennsylvania State Police, Abington Township, and a charter company, with a Jan. 16, 2026 deadline.
  • Lawmakers seek the May 2025 independent security assessment, contracts and invoices, emails and texts about construction and security work, State Police body-camera footage from Sept. 20 to Nov. 19, 2025, local permits and zoning records, and charter flight manifests from Jan. 14–16, 2025.
  • Right-to-Know records reported by Spotlight PA show planned private-home upgrades totaling just over $1.075 million, including a security system, electrical and engineering work, tree trimming, trenching, and nearly $289,000 for landscaping.
  • Spotlight PA also reported that some work began in summer 2025, preceding a State Ethics Commission advisory opinion in early October that found the upgrades did not constitute an improper personal benefit.
  • Shapiro’s office calls the subpoenas a partisan attack and says information has been provided based on security reviews following the April arson at the Governor’s Mansion, while State Police say they have turned over materials and are reviewing the requests to protect safety as Democrats criticize the effort as overreach and a privacy risk.
