Smith stated that the video was 'greatly mischaracterized' and removed it to avoid causing further offense, but public and board member condemnation persisted.
The Anti-Defamation League initially defended Musk's gesture as 'awkward,' but its Philadelphia affiliate called Smith's imitation 'unacceptable' and harmful to the community.
In addition to resigning from her township role, Smith stepped down from positions on the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library board and the nonprofit Knights for Life.
