Pennsylvania Activates Tier 4 Travel Restrictions as 45 MPH Limits Roll Out on Key Highways

Officials advise against nonessential travel, directing motorists to 511PA for real-time roadway and restriction updates.

Overview

  • Tier 4 restrictions took effect early Sunday and bar commercial vehicles, school and commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs and passenger cars towing trailers.
  • The order applies to all Pennsylvania interstates, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its extensions, along with specified U.S. and state routes listed by PennDOT.
  • PennDOT set temporary 45 mph limits on Philadelphia-area corridors including I-76, I-95, I-295, I-476, I-676, U.S. 1, 30, 202 and 422, and state routes 63, 100 Spur and 309.
  • Western Pennsylvania highways, including I-79, I-279, I-376, I-579 and Routes 28 and 65, are also under 45 mph speed restrictions.
  • Agencies say controls will be adjusted or lifted when conditions allow, guided by reports from crews and first responders, while outlets noted a minor midnight vs. 12:01 a.m. start-time discrepancy.
