Pedestrian Killed in Vancouver Crosswalk During Heavy Rain

Police say poor visibility from heavy rain and darkness may have played a role as investigators probe whether a walk signal was present.

Overview

  • A 45-year-old woman was struck and killed by a southbound SUV while using a marked crosswalk at Main Street and National just after midnight on Sunday.
  • Paramedics tried to resuscitate the woman at the scene but she was pronounced dead and the impact threw her about 30 metres.
  • The SUV driver remained at the scene and is co-operating with police who do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
  • Investigators are examining visibility, road and signal conditions and other factors to determine exactly what happened.
  • The crash follows a separate incident earlier in the week in which a seven-year-old was hit with minor injuries and prompted Vancouver police to warn residents about darker, wetter conditions and safe trick-or-treating.
