Pedestrian Killed After Entering Northbound I-280 in San Jose

California Highway Patrol closed two left lanes for nearly two hours during an investigation into why the man entered the freeway.

Overview

  • At about 4:55 a.m. on July 18, a man walked into the far left lane of northbound I-280 just south of Highway 17 and was struck by a Toyota sedan.
  • The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been publicly identified.
  • The Toyota driver remained at the scene, cooperated fully with officers, and was not injured.
  • CHP initially shut the two left lanes while keeping the two right lanes open and fully reopened the freeway by approximately 7 a.m.
  • Authorities are still investigating the collision and have asked anyone with information to contact the San Jose CHP area office.
