Peak Foliage Centers on Adirondacks and Catskills as Dry Weather Hastens Change

Dry, warm conditions are stressing trees, muting reds, pushing some high elevations past peak.

Overview

  • I LOVE NY’s Oct. 1–7 report lists numerous Adirondack and Catskill locations at or near peak color, including Lake Placid, Whiteface and Wanakena.
  • Observers say parts of the Hunter area are nearing the end of prime viewing, with elevations above 2,800 feet in Highmount already past peak.
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul has enacted a statewide outdoor burn ban through at least Oct. 15 due to dry conditions.
  • Nature experts report earlier leaf changes and warn that fewer deep reds and purples are likely because dry soils limit anthocyanin formation.
  • The New York Botanical Garden projects a late October to early November peak for the New York City area based on its foliage tracker.
