Overview
- The Tintwistle Moor blaze, which began on July 9 and was declared a major incident on July 12, and a separate Dovestone/Swineshaw fire have scorched a combined area reported as roughly 690 hectares or about 1,250 football pitches.
- Fire crews from Derbyshire, Greater Manchester and teams deployed through National Resilience remain on scene working across multiple sectors to extinguish hotspots and reduce the risk of re‑ignition.
- Light rain on July 26–27 has dampened surface vegetation in places but has not put out deep peat that continues to smoulder underground and can reignite after surface flames are gone.
- The A628 Woodhead Pass is closed to allow emergency and specialist vehicles to operate safely, and authorities are telling people to avoid affected moorland and to close windows and doors if they are affected by smoke.
- Farmers and the NFU say the scale of recent wildfires is stretching emergency services and are calling for a coordinated National Wildfire Strategy and targeted land management, such as grazing, to reduce fuel loads.
