PCIe 5.0 SSDs Reach the Mainstream With Big Speeds as Prices Fall

Independent testing shows sustained write rates often collapse under heavy load without robust cooling.

Overview

  • CHIP.de’s latest lab results report sharp differences in sustained performance, with Crucial’s P510 dropping from its peak after about eight seconds and Lexar’s NM990 holding roughly 55 seconds before stepping down.
  • Under prolonged stress, the Lexar NM990’s write speed fell from around 9,500 MB/s to about 3,500 MB/s, occasionally 2,000 MB/s, and to roughly 1,200 MB/s after 400 seconds in testing.
  • Retail pricing has slid, highlighted by Proshop listing Samsung’s 9100 PRO 2 TB (no heatsink) for €209.99, described as a new low for a PCIe 5.0 model.
  • Amazon is offering Samsung’s 990 Evo Plus 4 TB for €239.90, a reported new low, with manufacturer-rated speeds up to 7,250 MB/s read and 6,300 MB/s write.
  • Tested PCIe 5.0 drives commonly cluster around €0.093–€0.094 per GB, and several models ship without a heatsink, making motherboard cooling and PS5 compatibility key considerations.
