PayPal World Launches Global Wallet Interoperability Platform

Integrating digital wallets such as UPI and WeChat Pay, the network streamlines cross-border payments with an initial fall launch followed by expanded checkout features in 2026.

Overview

  • PayPal announced on July 23 the launch of PayPal World in partnership with NPCI International (UPI), Tenpay Global (WeChat Pay), Venmo and under a memorandum of understanding with Mercado Pago.
  • Through PayPal World, PayPal and Venmo users will be able to send money globally to anyone, even if the recipient does not hold a PayPal account.
  • Partner wallets will serve as payment methods for international transactions, allowing Indian consumers to pay U.S. merchants via UPI and travelers in China to scan WeChat Pay QR codes through the PayPal app.
  • The platform’s initial interoperability among PayPal, Venmo and launch partners begins this fall, connecting nearly two billion wallet users without requiring additional merchant integrations.
  • In 2026, Venmo users will gain online and in-store checkout capabilities at merchants that support PayPal’s payments.
