PayPal Launches PYUSDx Platform for Custom Stablecoins

The system repurposes PayPal USD as a common reserve for issuer-specific tokens and creates faster, turnkey paths for businesses to mint dollar-backed tokens while raising questions about reserve verification and concentration risk.

Overview

  • PayPal, with M0 and MoonPay, publicly launched PYUSDx on September 9, 2026, and three partners—Saturn, Concrete, and Cap—have already processed more than $100 million in activity through the platform.
  • M0 provides the programmable token infrastructure, MoonPay Digital Assets Limited issues the PYUSDx tokens, and Paxos continues to issue the underlying PYUSD that backs those tokens 1:1.
  • Issuers can name tokens, set access controls, choose token economics, and deploy across multiple blockchains, but PYUSDx tokens cannot currently be sent, received, or used inside PayPal or Venmo.
  • Industry observers and reporters flag two core risks: concentration of many tokens on a single reserve that could transmit a PYUSD disruption across projects, and differences in issuer and redemption rights between Paxos-issued PYUSD and MoonPay-issued derivative tokens.
  • The platform promises to cut issuance timelines from months to days and may raise demand for PYUSD, so the next signals to watch are how clearly the partners disclose reserves, how USD.AI and Fairblock integrate, and whether regulators scrutinize the shared-reserve model.
