Pay Deals Halt Bus Strikes in Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Birkenhead as Stagecoach Walkouts Continue

Unite attributes the deals to coordinated action, warning of further walkouts unless offers improve.

Overview

  • First Bus drivers in Greater Manchester accepted a deal that lifts base pay to £16 an hour backdated to April 1, 2025, with further increases scheduled including higher Sunday rates into 2026.
  • Planned walkouts by around 500 Stagecoach drivers in Chorley, Preston and Birkenhead were called off after workers voted for improved pay offers backdated to April 1.
  • Preston and Chorley drivers secured a one‑year 6.4% rise from £15.50 to £16.50 an hour, while Birkenhead drivers will receive a 10.2% increase over two years to £16.50.
  • Separate action at Metroline concluded on October 2, but Stagecoach drivers based in Oldham, Stockport and Middleton rejected a new offer and remain on strike.
  • Unite said it remains open to negotiations, with regional officials cautioning that further coordinated strike dates are set for October 10, 11, 13, 18, 23 and 24 unless acceptable offers are tabled.
