Paxton Urges Texas Universities to Reject CSC Agreement That Underpins New Enforcement Plan

He argues Texas law bars public schools from the pact’s arbitration requirement.

Overview

  • Ken Paxton sent three-page letters to seven Texas power-conference schools, including Baylor and Texas A&M, urging them not to sign the College Sports Commission’s participation agreement.
  • He also asked other state attorneys general to contact universities in their states to oppose the pact.
  • The agreement would only take effect if all 68 schools in the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and ACC sign, and it would limit court challenges by routing disputes into arbitration.
  • Texas Tech’s leadership had already flagged legal concerns, and several universities have privately indicated they will not sign without revisions.
  • Schools were asked to sign by Dec. 3, and the deal would let the CSC enforce House settlement rules such as a revenue-sharing cap starting at $20.5 million with penalties that could include fines, revenue withholding and limited postseason bans.
