Pawana Dam Nears Capacity, Authorities Step Up Releases in Pimpri-Chinchwad

Overview

  • With the reservoir reported at roughly 99.4–99.7% full, controlled releases are underway and PCMC says discharge will rise to 5,660 cusecs by 2 pm after earlier updates of about 2,860–4,300 cusecs.
  • The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Pune district, warning of intense rain with winds of 40–60 km/h.
  • Commissioner Shekhar Singh said the city is on high alert with 24x7 monitoring of riverbanks, and assistance is available via the PCMC control room (020-67331111 / 020-28331111) and Fire (7030908991).
  • Releases from other reservoirs also increased, with Mulshi discharging 5,000 cusecs into the Mula and Khadakwasla at 9,659 cusecs into the Mutha, subject to change with rainfall.
  • Waterlogging and traffic disruptions were reported across Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Kejudevi embankment overflowed near Aditya Birla Hospital in Chinchwad, and FITE urged IT companies to allow work-from-home.
