• In a recent Uncut interview, Weller recalled travelling as a teen in the 1970s with his father’s friend Ronnie, who kept a young lion riding shotgun in the van.
• The lion, still a cub at the time, lashed out when Weller leaned against the back of the passenger seat and attacked him mid-journey.
• After dropping off the band at the Surrey venue, Ronnie returned later with the lion to carry them home.
• Weller said Ronnie cared for the lion for several years before relinquishing it once it grew too large.
• He said that wake-up nerves once left his stomach churning and that he now relishes time at home with his wife and their three children instead of life on the road.
