An 11-year-old boy from Los Angeles pulled the rare Paul Skenes card from a Christmas gift pack and chose to auction it rather than accept offers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The card, a 2024 Topps Chrome Update MLB debut patch autograph, is a one-of-a-kind collectible featuring a patch from Skenes' debut jersey and his autograph.
The auction concluded early Friday morning with a final sale price of $1.11 million, surpassing Skenes' 2025 MLB salary of $875,000 and setting a record for Skenes memorabilia.
Fanatics Collect facilitated the auction and will donate its proceeds to Los Angeles fire relief efforts following January's wildfires.
The family plans to use the majority of the proceeds for their children's college savings, with a small portion reserved for other purposes.
