Paul Mescal Says He Will Ration Roles, Step Back Until 2028 Beatles Films

He frames the slowdown as a way to protect his craft from burnout during a heavy awards push.

Overview

  • Mescal said in a Guardian interview that he will start rationing his workload, explaining he cannot keep working at the same pace five or six years into his career.
  • After finishing promotion for Hamnet, he said he hopes to stay largely out of public view until 2028, when he is set to play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project.
  • He is currently promoting Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, which has drawn strong reviews and awards buzz ahead of its UK and Ireland release on January 9.
  • He is also on the press trail for Oliver Hermanus’s The History of Sound, opening in UK cinemas on January 23, which he says is the kind of intimate film that “takes more out of the well.”
  • Mescal said he misses the stage and may focus on theatre for a period, with a National Theatre engagement slated for 2027, and he and co-star Josh O’Connor voiced distaste for showy “Oscars reel” moments.
