Paul Mario Day, Heavy Metal Pioneer and Original Iron Maiden Singer, Dies at 69

His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes that highlight his influence on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

  • Paul Mario Day died peacefully at his home in Australia on July 29 at 69 years old, and his official cause of death has not been announced.
  • His former band More announced his passing on Facebook, praising his role in shaping the NWOBHM scene and sending condolences to his family, friends and fans.
  • Day was recruited by bassist Steve Harris as Iron Maiden’s first vocalist in December 1975 and helped establish the band’s early sound before departing in October 1976.
  • In 1980 he formed More, released the album Warhead in 1981 and performed at that year’s Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington alongside AC/DC and Whitesnake.
  • He later fronted Wildfire and joined a reformed Sweet lineup in 1985, recording the Live at the Marquee album and cementing his legacy across multiple rock and metal acts.
