Patriots Uncertain About TreVeyon Henderson for Week 1

His continued absence puts New England on short running-back depth and makes Rhamondre Stevenson the likely workhorse if Henderson cannot play.

Overview

  • TreVeyon Henderson injured his right ankle during practice on Aug. 24 and has not participated in team practices since then, leaving his availability in doubt for the Sept. 9 opener.
  • Coach Mike Vrabel described Henderson as day-to-day and said the team is still evaluating him as the Patriots complete final practices before flying to Seattle.
  • New England’s active roster lists only one other running back, Corey Kiner, who was acquired in a trade on Aug. 28 and has limited NFL snaps.
  • The Patriots are expected to consider elevating practice-squad backs Lan Larison or Hassan Haskins to the active roster and to prepare Rhamondre Stevenson for a heavier snap share if Henderson is unavailable.
  • Henderson’s absence would remove New England’s primary big-play threat from the backfield, shift pass-protection and special-teams choices, and make Tuesday’s final injury designation the key update to watch.
