Patriot High Becomes Eighth Forfeit to Jurupa Valley Over Transgender Player

The school district says state law requires schools to allow athletes to compete based on gender identity.

Overview

  • Jurupa Unified confirmed Patriot High will forfeit the Sept. 26 match, the eighth forfeit and the first from a school in the same district.
  • Previous refusals included Riverside Poly, Rim of the World, Orange Vista, A.B. Miller, and, at a Sept. 13 tournament, Aquinas, Yucaipa and San Dimas.
  • Three current or former Jurupa Valley teammates have sued JUSD, the CIF and the California Department of Education alleging harassment, privacy violations and infringements on religious liberty.
  • Two plaintiffs who are current seniors, Alyssa McPherson and Hadeel Hazameh, say they will step away from the team while the transgender athlete participates.
  • District officials cite California Education Code 221.5(f) and direct critics to lawmakers, as the CDE declines comment and the governor’s office points to the CIF, the CDE and the legislature.
