Patrick Releases First 2027 Texas Senate Charges on Sharia Law, Property Taxes and Grid Security

The assignments steer Senate committees toward proposals, including State Affairs scrutiny of the East Plano Islamic Center already facing an attorney general lawsuit.

  • Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued five interim charges and requested committee recommendations by Feb. 20, with a fuller list expected in March.
  • The State Affairs Committee was directed to work on preventing Sharia law in Texas and to examine the East Plano Islamic Center and related development entities.
  • Under “Operation Double Nickel,” the Finance Committee will evaluate another $40,000 homestead exemption increase and a proposal to lower the senior tax-relief age from 65 to 55.
  • The Business and Commerce Committee will assess critical infrastructure and electric-grid supply chains for vulnerabilities from hostile foreign entities such as China, Russia and Iran.
  • The Education Committee will pursue an “America and Texas first” approach and review school ties to designated hostile agents, while Health and Human Services was tasked with fraud-prevention recommendations for programs including Medicaid and child care.
