Overview

  • The government plans to launch water metro services in Patna, connecting both banks of the Ganga to improve urban mobility and ferry operations.
  • Under National Waterway-1, Bihar will get two cargo terminals in Patna, a vessel repair and manufacturing centre, and 16 community jetties across Ganga districts.
  • The National Inland Navigation Institute in Patna is being upgraded into a Centre of Excellence with fresh investment to support water transport innovations.
  • A joint task force comprising the Bihar government, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Inland Waterways Authority of India will explore sustainable development opportunities in 12 Ganga districts.
  • The Jal Marg Vikas Project has reached 68.86% completion and has driven a 220% surge in cargo traffic on NW-1 since 2014.
