Paterson Isolates Water Main Leak as System Pressure Rises, Boil Advisory Persists

Officials project repairs will conclude by Tuesday night, with system flushing and bacteriological testing needed to confirm water safety

Overview

  • Work to seal off Friday’s break behind Hinchliffe Stadium reached a milestone Monday night as crews began rebuilding pressure in the distribution network.
  • More than 185,000 residents in Paterson, Prospect Park, Haledon and North Haledon remain under a boil-water advisory.
  • The Passaic Valley Water Commission and city have set up comfort stations at John F. Kennedy High School, distributed bottled water and deployed portable showers and toilets for affected residents.
  • Repair crews have battled steep, wooded terrain and century-old pipes dating to the 1880s, requiring custom replacement parts and around-the-clock access efforts.
  • PVWC is coordinating with Ridgewood Water, Veolia and the New Jersey DEP to install temporary interconnections and optimize valve operations ahead of final repairs.
