Past Year Hottest in History Due to Fossil Fuels, Climate Change Impacted 90% of Global Population

Record-Breaking Heatwaves, Deadliest Storms, Severe Droughts and Devastating Wildfires Experienced Globally in Last Year, Affecting 7.3 Billion People and Exposing 1.9 Billion to Dangerous Heatwaves Due to Man-Made Climate Change.

The past year on Earth was recorded as the hottest due to the burning of fossil fuels, emitting gases like carbon dioxide, which intensifies climate change. The average global temperature rose by 1.3 degrees Celsius, near the limit set by the Paris Agreement.
A staggering 90% of the global population, encompassing 7.3 billion people, experienced at least 10 days of high temperatures that were three times more likely due to climate change. Additionally, 1.9 billion people, or one in four, suffered from dangerous heatwaves.
Impact of climate change has resulted in diverse extreme weather events, including Africa's deadliest storm 'Storm Daniel', which claimed between 4,000 and 11,000 lives. In India, 86% of the population experienced at least 30 days of elevated temperatures.
The Amazon region in Brazil faced a severe drought, causing rivers to dry to historic lows and cutting off locals from sources of fresh water and food. Meanwhile, the US had 383 reported deaths due to extreme weather events, 93 of which were associated with the deadliest wildfire of the century in Maui.
Wildfires had a significant impact in Canada, leading to one in every 200 people evacuating their homes. The long periods of heat caused the fires to burn more intensely and last longer, sending smoke billowing across much of North America.
Climate change's impact varied across different regions; Jamaica, for instance, experienced high temperatures made four times more likely by climate change, making it the country where climate change was most powerfully active over the past year.
Despite the intensity of the recent global heat, oceans have been absorbing most of the excess heat related to climate change. However, scientists warn that oceans are approaching their temperature absorption limit, thereby increasing the risk of more extreme temperature rises in the future.
