Overview
- The Rahman/Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah in Multan on Tuesday when roughly 14–15 coaches left the tracks while travelling from Karachi to Peshawar, leaving between four and six people dead and dozens injured with one small child reported missing.
- Rescue teams dispatched ambulances, fire and rescue vehicles, cranes and a relief train and evacuated dozens of passengers to Nishtar Hospital, which declared an emergency to treat the casualties.
- Rail traffic through Multan was suspended after the crash and services were being diverted via Lodhran and Khanewal until wreckage is cleared and the line is restored.
- Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi appointed the Federal Government Inspector of Railways as inquiry officer to collect evidence and determine cause while passenger claims of excessive speed and recent repairs to a coach remain unverified.
- The derailment revives long‑running safety concerns about Pakistan Railways’ ageing tracks, signalling and maintenance record and could prompt faster inspections, compensation for victims and political pressure for upgrades.
