Passenger Train Derails Near Cléon, 44 Injured

A judicial inquiry is under way to establish whether an object on the tracks caused the derailment as rail services on the Rouen–Caen line remain suspended.

Overview

  • The derailment happened Friday evening, September 11, 2026, at about 19:45 between Tourville and Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin near Cléon and involved a TER carrying about 186 passengers.
  • Emergency teams activated the ORSEC NOVI mass‑casualty plan and deployed roughly 130–140 firefighters, five medical teams and about 80 vehicles to rescue and care for passengers.
  • Officials report 44 people were injured, including an 18‑year‑old woman in critical condition who was airlifted to Rouen University Hospital, while others were treated on site or taken to hospital.
  • The public prosecutor and the police judiciaire de Rouen opened a judicial probe; toxicology and drug tests on the driver were negative and investigators say early elements point to a possible collision with an object on the track, though no cause has been confirmed.
  • The incident cut power to the line, halted train services between Rouen and Caen and prompted substitution buses; authorities warn the investigation will take time and say SNCF will fully cooperate as they assess safety and restore traffic.
