Passenger Tampered With Emergency-Exit Cover on IndiGo Delhi–Pune Flight

Investigators are probing whether touching the exit lever cover triggered the alarm, thereby risking passengers' safety.

Overview

  • A passenger seated next to an emergency exit on IndiGo flight 6E6884 touched the exit lever cover shortly after takeoff, which set off an in-flight alarm and caused panic on board.
  • The flight left Delhi around 12:45 a.m. on Monday and landed in Pune at about 2:00 a.m. after the alarm alerted crew to the interference.
  • Police identified the passenger as 33-year-old Gaurav Satyendra Rautela of Saswad and recorded his statement that he touched the cover out of curiosity.
  • An IndiGo crew member filed a complaint, and police have registered a case and issued notices under Section 35(3) of the BNSS, Section 125 of the BNS, and provisions of the Aircraft Act.
  • Aircraft emergency-exit covers are linked to alarm systems designed to warn crew of tampering, and investigators will determine whether this incident, following a similar 2024 case, leads to criminal charges or regulatory action.
