- Early on Sunday the Virgo Transport 8, sailing from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, lost contact after the crew reported heavy weather and that the ship was listing.
- Rescue teams have pulled 102 people from the water and recovered one body while the ship’s manifest of about 240–243 passengers leaves roughly 140 people unaccounted for.
- The ferry’s last transmitted position was about 80 nautical miles southwest of Basirih pier in Banjarmasin and the vessel is now presumed to have sunk.
- Basarnas and Banjarmasin search-and-rescue units set up an operations post at Trisakti and dispatched multiple ships and crews to the last known coordinates to look for survivors.
- Indonesia’s reliance on sea travel, plus factors such as aging vessels, passenger and cargo overloading, and uneven enforcement of safety rules increase the risk of similar deadly incidents and are likely to draw renewed scrutiny of maritime oversight.
