Passenger Duct-Taped on American Flight Identified and Cut Loose by Employer After Midair Outburst

Federal and regulatory reviews are under way to decide whether the state assault and disorderly conduct charges will be followed by federal charges or airline enforcement action.

Overview

  • Arthur Layne Lundeen, 67, was identified after photos and video circulated and was removed from American Airlines Flight 618 when the plane diverted to Baltimore on Sept. 3.
  • Maryland Transportation Authority Police arrested Lundeen and charged him with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, and court records show he was released on his own recognizance with a trial set for Oct. 19.
  • Passengers and crew restrained Lundeen with zip ties and layers of duct tape after witnesses say he hurled racist and homophobic slurs, struck another passenger, pushed a woman and bit people during the struggle.
  • Long Realty said it promptly ended its affiliation with Lundeen after the incident, and the FBI is conducting interviews and will consult the U.S. Attorney’s office to determine whether federal charges are warranted.
  • The episode adds to continued concern about unruly airline behavior this year, as the FAA and carriers face a surge in midflight disturbances and may consider new enforcement or safety steps in response.
