Passenger Dies After Bus Window Detaches in São Sebastião

Police are investigating, with the city ordering Sancetur to submit records and explanations.

Overview

  • Renata Yassu Nakama, 26, fell from a moving municipal bus on January 2 after a side window detached and she died of her injuries on January 5, according to the police report.
  • A Polícia Militar record notes the bus carried 77 passengers, which is within the permitted limit, while family members and riders described the vehicle as overcrowded and said Renata messaged about a “super crowded” bus.
  • The incident occurred on the Canto do Mar–Centro line along SP-055 near Praia das Cigarras, with the initial report stating she had been leaning on the window before it gave way.
  • The Prefeitura de São Sebastião formally notified contractor Sancetur to provide operational records and preventive measures, and the company said the case is with its legal department and declined further comment.
  • A similar case on November 20 involved Carlos Eduardo de Sousa Chaves, who says he was thrown from a bus window operated by the same company and suffered serious injuries without receiving company assistance.
