Passenger Booked After Tampering With Emergency-Exit Lever on IndiGo Delhi–Pune Flight

The probe signals legal consequences for tampering with safety equipment after an in-flight alarm.

Overview

  • Shortly after takeoff, an alarm sounded on IndiGo flight 6E6884 when a passenger reportedly touched the protective cover of an emergency-exit lever, and the aircraft landed in Pune without further incident.
  • Police have identified and booked the accused as 33-year-old Gaurav Satyendra Rautela of Saswad, who was seated next to the emergency exit in seat 19D.
  • A crew member lodged the complaint that led Pune Airport Police to register a case under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Aircraft Act and to serve a BNSS Section 35(3) notice.
  • During preliminary questioning the passenger told investigators he touched the cover out of curiosity and did not know it was linked to the emergency-exit mechanism.
  • Officials said the incident illustrates how exit-cover sensors are wired to onboard alarms to protect passengers and noted a similar 2024 case as a precedent for criminal enforcement and airline procedures.
