Pasadena ISD Pauses Plan to Move Staff to TRS ActiveCare

The district withdrew the vote after employees warned family premiums could rise by thousands of dollars and the board promised more review.

Overview

  • Superintendent Dr. Toni Lopez withdrew the agenda item Tuesday and said Pasadena ISD will not transition employees to TRS ActiveCare on January 1.
  • The proposed TRS ActiveCare options showed family premiums rising from the district’s current $628–$1,753 range to about $2,292–$2,647, which employees said could mean increases of more than $1,800 per month for some families.
  • District officials cited losses in the district’s self-funded health plan and noted the district currently contributes $322 a month per enrolled employee toward premiums as the reason for exploring a change.
  • Employees, including teachers Jessica Wheat and Christina Rodriguez, said they received notice less than 24 hours before the scheduled board vote and sought an ex parte temporary restraining order while filing public-records requests to trace the proposal’s timeline.
  • Pasadena ISD will keep the current self-funded plan for now, present short-term premium options early next week, call a special board meeting to reconsider choices, and acknowledge the decision could affect staff finances, recruitment, and retention.
