Partial Marquise Collapse at Former Caixa Branch in Aldeota

A fresh Defesa Civil inspection is planned and municipal prosecutors may seek court orders to force repairs and recover costs.

Overview

  • A section of the metal marquise fell early Friday at the long‑vacant building on Avenida Barão de Studart, leaving no reported injuries and scattering debris onto the sidewalk and roadway.
  • Police, the Municipal Guard and traffic agents cordoned off the area and the city’s infrastructure teams began removing rubble with officials saying the work will not cost the municipality.
  • Agefis inspected the site, issued fines for lack of closure and conservation and notified Caixa, while Caixa says it sold the property in 2002 and is pursuing legal steps because the buyer did not register the deed.
  • Authorities say the building was repeatedly invaded and stripped of parts before the collapse and that two men were arrested in October on camera removing aluminium pieces from the site.
  • Defesa Civil will perform a new structural evaluation in the coming days and the Procuradoria‑Geral do Município could file judicial measures to identify the liable party and require repairs and reimbursement, with local businesses and residents already reporting fear, threats and disruption to commerce.
