Overview

  • At 7:43 pm on August 17, part of a staircase at Building No. 14/16 in Chira Bazar gave way, leaving residents stranded on the second floor.
  • Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, 108 ambulance service and ward staff conducted rescue and evacuation operations.
  • Three individuals, including 70-year-old Damayanti Rathod, were transported to GT Hospital and are in stable condition.
  • The collapse occurred during an IMD orange alert as the BMC reported six short circuits, 19 tree or branch falls and two wall collapses citywide.
  • The incident is the latest in a series of monsoon-season structural failures tied to aging and unauthorized construction and enforcement gaps.
