Parliament Sets Vande Mataram Debates With Modi Opening Dec. 8, Shah Leading Upper House Dec. 9

Leaders finalised the timetable through an all-party meeting to restart disrupted Winter Session work.

Overview

  • The Lok Sabha will hold a 10-hour discussion on December 8 with the prime minister initiating the debate at noon and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh slated to speak after him.
  • The BJP has been allotted three hours in the Lower House for its interventions during the commemorative discussion.
  • The Rajya Sabha will take up the topic on December 9 with Home Minister Amit Shah opening the debate and Leader of the House J. P. Nadda listed to participate.
  • A separate debate on election reforms, including the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, is scheduled for December 9–10 in the Lok Sabha and December 10–11 in the Rajya Sabha.
  • Opposition parties differ on the timing as Congress plans speakers such as Gaurav Gogoi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while TMC backs holding the discussion and the BJP–Congress dispute over the song’s 1937 stanzas is expected to surface.
