Parliament Seeks Report on Attack in Flood-Hit North Bengal as Mamata Visits Injured BJP MP

Lawmakers move to establish accountability with a formal account of the assault during the region’s flood emergency.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met injured BJP MP Khagen Murmu in a Siliguri hospital after he and MLA Shankar Ghosh were hurt in a mob attack in Nagrakata, with doctors saying Murmu may need surgery but is stable.
  • Parliament’s Lok Sabha Secretariat asked the Union Home Ministry for a factual note within three days on the assault, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju warned delay could invite privilege action.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident as an example of poor law and order, and Banerjee accused him of politicising a disaster, appealed for restraint, and criticised convoy “photo-ops” in disaster zones.
  • The death toll from landslides and floods in Darjeeling district rose to 32, thousands remain affected, and the state and NDRF continue rescue and relief; Banerjee visited Mirik, handed compensation to families, and announced a temporary bridge rebuild within 15 days.
  • BJP leaders blamed the TMC and some alleged involvement of “jihadi elements,” demands for a probe surfaced, the TMC denied orchestration and called it local anger over a large convoy without relief, and no arrests were reported publicly as of Tuesday.
