Parliament Panel Flags Slow AMRUT 2.0 Progress, Urges National Push on Urban Water Security

The panel warns current investments fall far short of long-term urban water needs.

Overview

  • Only 678 of 3,032 AMRUT 2.0 water-body projects are complete, and rejuvenation plans exist for about 10.5% of mapped sites.
  • Sanctioned funding covers roughly half of the High-Powered Expert Committee’s 2011 estimate for 2012–2031 urban water supply investment.
  • The committee recommended a National Urban Wastewater Reuse Policy with time-bound state adoption and systems to track actual reuse.
  • It called for a National Urban Aquifer Recharge Strategy featuring defined benchmarks, monitoring mechanisms, and GIS-enabled tracking.
  • The report sought formal coordination with the Ministry of Jal Shakti and states, annual targets and GIS monitoring, a funding needs assessment through 2047, and optimal use and expansion of STPs to achieve full wastewater treatment.
