Coal had lived with Danny Taurozzi since 2013, when the cat sanctuary of insulated, small houses similar to the nearby Parliament buildings was closed.

Overview

  • Coal, believed to be 17, was humanely euthanized after an aggressive form of lung cancer diagnosed in March 2024 spread to his lungs
  • He was the sole surviving member of a volunteer-run cat colony established on Parliament Hill for rodent control and public affection
  • An online campaign raised just over C$15,000 to cover Coal’s treatment alongside pet insurance and his caretaker’s personal contributions
  • Coal gained international fame through a Japanese game show appearance, an American documentary and a symbolic 2015 animal welfare bid for prime minister
  • While the other final colony members’ ashes were returned to the old site, Coal’s caretaker Danny Taurozzi has chosen to keep his remains
