Overview
- Rajya Sabha passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on August 20 by voice vote, a day after Lok Sabha approval, sending it for Presidential assent.
- Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said IIM Guwahati will admit students in the current academic session, with faculty appointments and classes to start from temporary facilities.
- The Bill provides a ₹555 crore corpus for 2025–30 from the Consolidated Fund of India, after which the institute is expected to become self-sustaining.
- Until the first Board is constituted under the IIM Act, the Centre will appoint persons to exercise the Board’s powers; state leaders have said IIM Ahmedabad will mentor academic activities.
- IIM Guwahati is designated an institution of national importance, becoming the second IIM in the Northeast, and is listed under a Special Development Package linked to a Centre–Assam–ULFA settlement.
