Parliament Allocates Senate Seats for Electoral Reforms Panel as PPP Names Full Slate

Late-stage consultations will decide committee membership, chairmanship, the scope of any election-rule changes.

Overview

  • Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry announced on Thursday that the PML-N, PPP and PTI will each receive two Senate seats on the Electoral Reforms Committee while ANP, BAP, the National Party and JUI-F get one seat each.
  • The Pakistan Peoples Party has submitted seven nominees to the panel, naming five National Assembly members—Shazia Marri, Abdul Qadir Patel, Sadiq Memon, Nawabzada Iftikhar and Ali Qasim Gilani—and two senators, Farooq H. Naek and Zameer Ghumro, after withdrawing Senator Shahadat Awan.
  • The PPP says it was promised the committee chairmanship and is positioning Farooq H. Naek as a likely candidate, though the party has said it will finalise who leads the panel internally.
  • Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will make the final decisions on membership after consultations with coalition and opposition leaders, and the joint opposition remains divided on whether to join the committee and who to nominate pending an All Parties Conference.
  • The committee’s composition and leadership matter because its recommendations could affect Election Commission appointments and changes to electoral laws, a point critics have seized on as some opposition figures and outlets question the PPP’s motives while others call for cross-party consensus.
