Parking-Lot Project at Dinosaur National Monument Unearths New Fossils, First Dig at Site Since 1924

Scientists are preparing likely Diplodocus remains at the Utah Field House.

Overview

  • Monument staff discovered fossils on Sept. 16, 2025 during asphalt removal near the Quarry Exhibit Hall.
  • Work paused for assessment and a team excavated roughly 3,000 pounds of fossil-bearing rock between mid-September and mid-October.
  • The material was transferred to the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum for cleaning and study.
  • Visitors can watch preparation in the museum’s lab, and select pieces are already on display at the museum and in the Quarry Exhibit Hall.
  • The parking and accessibility upgrades resumed after recovery and have been completed at the popular Wall of Bones site, which showcases about 1,500 Late Jurassic fossils.
