Parker Signs Bill to Reopen Filbert Street Bus Terminal by May 1

A $40-per-bus fee will fund a PPA-run stopgap facility.

Overview

  • Internal demolition is complete, and a $1.7–2 million cosmetic overhaul with new lighting, bathrooms and a mural is underway to meet the May 1 target.
  • The Philadelphia Parking Authority will operate the terminal, enforce taxi and shared-ride lanes, and collect the $40-per-stop charge approved by City Council.
  • Buses will access the site from Market Street rather than Arch Street to reduce diesel traffic through Chinatown, according to officials.
  • The city plans a 10-year lease for 1001 Filbert Street and will begin a community process to identify a permanent intercity bus hub.
  • Officials say the reopening will move curbside operations off Spring Garden and help handle visitors for World Cup matches, the MLB All-Star Game and America 250 events.
