Park Service Drops MLK and Juneteenth From 2026 Free Days, Adds Flag Day

Interior says the changes prioritize U.S. taxpayers.

Overview

  • The National Park Service set a 2026 slate of “patriotic fee‑free days” that includes June 14, which is Flag Day and the president’s birthday, plus the July 4 weekend and the agency’s 110th anniversary.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth were removed from the free-entry calendar that many parks used in prior years.
  • Beginning in 2026, fee-free entry applies only to U.S. citizens and residents, with nonresidents required to pay entrance fees and any new nonresident charges.
  • Starting Jan. 1, 2026, international visitors without an annual pass will be charged an additional $100 per person at the 11 most visited national parks.
  • A $250 nonresident America the Beautiful annual pass is being introduced, and pass coverage will extend to up to two motorcycles, as critics question reduced recognition of Black history and Interior defends cost-sharing by foreign visitors.
