Paris Prosecutor Says Listeria Found at Chavegrand in 2024, Expands Criminal Probe

Specialized national units are examining possible reporting failures after 22 illnesses, including two fatalities.

Overview

  • Prosecutors confirmed Listeria had been detected on surfaces at Fromagerie Chavegrand in 2024, a finding revealed through additional records obtained by the local DDETSPP after initial company analyses reported no prior positives.
  • The Paris public health unit took over the case on August 20 and opened an inquiry into alleged involuntary manslaughter, negligent injuries, endangerment, deception and related food-safety offenses.
  • The investigation has been assigned to the DGGN, OCLAESP, BNVEP and the DDETSPP, with prosecutors clarifying that the DGCCRF is not involved following a competency shift to the Agriculture Ministry’s DGAL.
  • As of August 29, authorities counted 22 listeriosis cases across France linked to the episode, including two deaths of patients born in 1937 and 1947.
  • The alert originated with Carrefour’s routine sampling on May 30 of a cheese produced April 19 that tested positive on June 9, and all lots made before June 23 were recalled with broader precautionary recalls carried out in August.
