Paris Opens Trial of Three Women Accused of Joining ISIS and Taking Children to Syria

Prosecutors describe a long radicalization path, alleging ISIS-provided salaries and housing with children exposed to war.

Overview

  • Defendants are Jennyfer Clain, 34, her mother-in-law Christine Allain, 67, and sister-in-law Mayalen Duhart, 42; Clain is the niece of ISIS propagandists Jean-Michel and Fabien Clain.
  • The case is before the specially composed Paris assize court through 26 September, with Clain and Allain appearing in custody.
  • Charges include association de malfaiteurs terroriste, with Clain and Duhart also accused of evading parental obligations by taking children into a conflict zone; the maximum penalty is 30 years.
  • The three were arrested in Turkey’s Kilis province in 2019 after two years of displacement following Raqqa’s fall, then expelled to France with nine children aged 3 to 13.
  • Investigators say the women maintained a durable presence with jihadist groups and benefited from ISIS salaries or housing, and the repatriated children now live in foster care.
