Paris Court to Rule on Ultime Liberté Activists in Assisted-Death Case

Prosecutors have requested suspended sentences, citing a humanitarian motive.

Overview

  • Twelve members of Ultime Liberté, aged 75 to 89, await a verdict for actions taken between August 2018 and November 2020.
  • They are charged with illicit importation and trafficking of pentobarbital, a banned lethal barbiturate, rather than with incitement or assistance to suicide.
  • The public prosecutor asked for sentences of up to 18 months’ imprisonment, fully suspended, and no fines.
  • During the September–October 2025 hearings, witnesses described clandestine family-assisted deaths, including a priest who recounted helping his terminally ill father.
  • A separate bill from deputy Olivier Falorni that would create a legal right to aid to die passed the National Assembly on first reading and is scheduled for Senate debate at the end of January.
