Paris Court Sentences Nicolas Sarkozy to Five Years in Libyan Financing Case

Judges ruled on a conspiracy offense after evidence fell short on claims that Libyan funds financed his 2007 campaign.

Overview

  • Judges handed Sarkozy a five-year prison term and a €100,000 fine after finding him guilty of criminal conspiracy, whereas prosecutors had sought seven years and a €300,000 penalty.
  • He was acquitted of passive corruption and concealment of embezzled Libyan funds after the court said it was not proven the money ultimately financed the 2007 race.
  • Sarkozy declared he will appeal the verdict, and the appeal does not automatically suspend enforcement of the sentence.
  • The National Financial Prosecutor has summoned him for October 13 to determine detention logistics and notify the date he must begin serving time.
  • RTL reported he is expected to be held at Paris’s Santé prison in a protected unit, with a cell already prepared for him.
