Paris Air Quality Made Major Gains, Airparif Says Policy Drove Declines

City leaders have filed a court challenge to the regional air plan, calling it too weak to sustain progress.

Overview

  • Airparif reports that from 2012 to 2022 Parisians’ exposure fell about 40% for nitrogen dioxide and 28% for fine particles.
  • Road-traffic carbon dioxide emissions in Paris dropped roughly 35% over the same period.
  • More than half of recent emission reductions are attributed to public measures, with about 55% of the NO2 decline linked to vehicle fleet renewal.
  • Traffic reduction contributed about a quarter of the improvement, complemented by lower emissions from heating and other non-traffic sources.
  • Paris recorded no regulatory exceedances in 2024, yet officials highlight the continuing health burden and are contesting the 2025–2030 regional plan after ZFE rollbacks.
