Emilie Gomis, a former French basketball player and ambassador for the Paris 2024 Olympics, has resigned from her role following a controversy over a social media post related to the situation in Gaza.
Gomis had posted a message on Instagram showing maps of France from 1947, 1967 and 2023, with the French flag being gradually replaced by the Israeli flag, accompanied by a question: 'What would you do in this situation?'
The post, which came days after attacks by Hamas in Israel, led to accusations of anti-Semitism and support for Hamas, which Gomis strongly denied.
Despite her condemnation of the attacks and an apology for her post, Paris Olympics organizers stated that Gomis had contravened her duty of neutrality and was no longer in a position to continue her mission.
The controversy is the latest issue facing the Paris 2024 Olympics, which is already dealing with geopolitical strains from the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
