Overview

• Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskiret Singh Uppal, 36, are charged with murder alongside counts of manslaughter, causing or allowing the death of a child, and abandoning a child or causing unnecessary suffering.
• Prosecutors told the court the couple deliberately starved their daughter over an extended period, with experts citing malnutrition and fatal ketoacidosis as the cause of death.
• Police found Penelope Chandrie’s very emaciated body wrapped in a sheet at the family home in Hayes on December 17, 2023, with neck marks consistent with bindings, injuries to her hands, and a ligature-like item on the stairs.
• The court heard the parents kept the family isolated, failed to register the child’s birth or secure GP care or education, and lived in poor conditions with a diet described as mainly yoghurt, lentils and butter.
• Judge Lynn Tayton KC remanded both defendants in custody, set a plea hearing for December 16, and said a provisional trial date will be confirmed later.
